When is it appropriate to perform non-destructive testing (NDT) on structural components?

During major structural repairs only.

Only after a catastrophic failure.

Throughout every routine maintenance.

During periodic PM or when inspection indicates potential structural issues, to verify integrity without damage.

The idea is to use non-destructive testing to verify the health of structural components without causing any damage, and to do so at the right times in the maintenance cycle. NDT is most appropriate during periodic preventive maintenance or whenever an inspection flags potential issues. That way you can confirm whether a suspected defect is real and determine its extent before it leads to failure, all without tearing the component apart.

This isn’t limited to after major repairs or only after a catastrophic failure, and it’s not something you must do every time you perform routine maintenance unless your program specifies it. If routine inspections show nothing concerning, NDT may not be needed; if something looks suspicious, NDT helps verify integrity safely and efficiently.
